Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu

Story:

Fumoffu is what happens when the creators of Full Metal Panic say: "We had something going with these characters. Why aren't we getting more viewers with all the mecha and all this military paraphernalia? Okay, next time, we tone down the military mumbo-jumbo and make the whole series a romantic high school comedy - only, let's have Sousuke whip out pistols and grenades at every street corner." Despite the lack of real-life combat action (And only ONE scene with that cool Blue Sub 6 - esque submarine! T_T) the story was funny and attention getting. The comedy is as endless as it is side-splitting, and it banks heavily on Sagara being a trained soldier amidst a high school environments (In the first episode, he detonates his shoe locker with a wad of C4 because he thinks it "might be dangerous." Thumbs up on this count!

Characters:

The characters and the story are interchangable - and thus recieve the same grade. It brings back all of the popular characters, from the cold, militant, and utterly clueless Sagara Sousuke, to the brash, abrassive and beautiful Chidori Kaname, to the "charismatic" Mellisa Mao, to the ever perverted Kurtz Weber, to the undeniably kawaii Teresa Tesstarossa. While the series places them in some undeniably cliche positions, and follows a run of the mill, one-shot themes, the characters give the show fresh life and an inescapable dose of sheer comedy.

Music:

The music didn't stand out for me that much. Some good anime music, for me, has me humming the song in my sleep, and that the series did not do. It suited the show, though, and had no real bad points to it (Unless you really, really can't stand female singers, cause that's all I heard), but it just...didn't strike me as all that fantastic.

Animation:

The basic animation was top notch, a definite reflection of the original series - and the animation soars whenever it gets to dynamic shots and dramtic emphasis. (There was even a Matrix spoof in one of the episodes.) Not much to say, except that ti was good.

Comments:

No mechas in this anime. I personally didn't care for the mecha's that much, but I thought they should have at least appeared in one episode. But alas. I guess it makes up for it by making Sousuke's "disguise" sort of mecha-ish, at least, as far as the interior goes. (Once you see the show, you'll see what I'm talking about.) If you liked FMP for the mechas, don't bother with this series- you'll be dissapointed.

Not to be confused with FMP! this is not a Mecha anime, but a comic one. If you stop expecting Mecha fighting at every corner, you can probably relax and really enjoy the ride!
