Story:

Beck is the story of a boy becoming a man as he emerges from his cucoon of pop idol music and becomes a a singer for a rock band. Bored with his life and in the tender age that we all know to be just ripe with teen angst, Koyuki longs to belong as everyone does. In his quest to find his place he meets a boy named Ryuskei who is also on a quest to form the perfect rock band. This story is not only the most captivating I have ever encountered in my years as an avid anime watcher, but it is by far the most well developed and realistic in its drama.

Characters:

Characters both main and backround are all very well developed with each their own desires and convictions. Once or twice some characters you thought were important will dissapear for a time but only because they have served their purpose in moving the plot along.

Music:

The music is the key to unlocking the magical hold that Beck has on you. Once you watch this series your next move will inevitably be to get the OST. Most of the songs sung in the show are covers done by one band to create the allusion of the band Beck being real. Truly this music set a prescedent for all other Rock anime to follow in the future

Animation:

The animation is the one sad thing about Beck. With so many great qualities there had to be atleast one catch. It seems very underbudget except when it comes to the guitars which appear to be cg. My guess is the money all went to make realistic guitar animations.

I heard about an anime about a rock band that was supposed to be really good, so I decided to watch it. Having viewed it, I'm pained to say that it's more of a waste of time than anything else. The story is about some junior high wall flower who finds himself by getting involved with rock musicians and joining a band. Along the way, he learns to stand up for himself, find love, and so on and so forth. It's a tried and true formula, though by no means original. And the kid gets bullied. A lot. I know it's a staple of this sort of storyline, but it's just too noticeable. You'd think a strong point of this would be the music. Unfortunately, you'd be wrong. Every song follows standard rock patterns. Even the songs by Dying Breed, a super famous band in the show's reality, are contrived (to the point that anyone who hears them will scream "Oasis with loud guitars!"). The immersion factor of the music, however, is very strong. The show makes sure to use real guitar models and refer to actual rock stars enough to let you feel something for the characters. From the main guitarist's Les Paul to the protagonist's Gretsch White Falcon to the far more obscure Fender Jazzmaster and Jaguar (they even mention Kurt Kobain played one!), you know that the creators of the show did their homework. Perhaps the biggest dent in the show is the song lyrics. The staff could've hired a real songwriting team if they were going to make the lyrics in English, but they didn't. I don't think anyone will argue that "Full moon sway / gently in the night of one fine day" makes any sort of sense. The English is something that comes back to bite the show in the ass a few times. Many characters are supposed to speak English fluent, but they clearly struggle with accent issues. There are also certain awkward moments that would make sense if the conversations were in Japanese, but they're not. The dual languages really fit this show in concept, but the execution is lacking. Finally, there's the animation and character designs. Most are unpolished and sloppy at best. Quite possibly the most aggravating character is a friend of the protagonist who looks like a junior high boy with the face of a forty-year-old pedophile. He also walks with his legs flopping in front of him. These things pile up to the point that it's hard to enjoy the show. I'm not saying Beck is the worst thing ever. It's just short of good. I really like the idea of rock and music anime, but this one just doesn't click. The animation and music are just sub-par. If you want to watch a real music show, check out Nodame Cantabile (they play real pieces and make sure that ever instrument being played is animated playing the proper notes, which is beyond impressive).

BECK is definitely one of the most realistic anime I have ever seen. It illustrated real life scenarios of a high school kid who later on sings in a band and then how the band become famous. The music fits the anime perfectly and the songs the characters sing during the anime are just beautiful. Excellent story and excellent character designs with minor issues with the art. Overall, in my opinion, one of the most enjoyable anime I have ever seen since Honey and Clover. As usual, I don't understand why people give this a 0 or low rating. Is it because real life stories are not interesting enough for you or are you still not grown up yet to watch anime this well done? If you don't appreciate good anime then i suggest that you don't leave a comment here to embarrass your self.
