Story:

Best friends and high school students (I assume) Koharuno Silk, Ohtori Vivienne, and Moroboshi Tsubomi decide to go on a shopping trip to Kichijouji after school on a sunny Monday afternoon, running into Moroboshi Matoko – self proclaimed “high school news correspondent” - on the way. Two things are shortly revealed, one that Silk has a rather prominent crush on Matoko, and two... Welcome to modern day Tokyo – with a twist: just like your favorite Sentai flavored show, this Tokyo gets besieged by the giant monster of the week... on a weekly basis. Every Monday, to be precise. This is where Matoko is headed, says his sister Tsubomi: Monster hunting. But, you ask, who is the hero of the common man? Giant mosters just beg for heroes, right? Why, it’s UFO man, of course! Descending from the skies ubove to protect those who live below! Or at least it was, until one fateful Monday when the giant plastic Godzilla knock-off attacked, and UFO man squished three young girls like the bugs they appeared to be. Good job, hero. Ah, but wait! UFO man, being the just and noble person he is, uses his power to resurrect the three girls (after all, you can’t just indiscriminately crush flowers of femininity, even if it was an accident). Problem: To bring them back to life, UFO man had to use his own body and soul, which *did* bring the girls back to life... but left UFO man the size of a chibi-UFO man figurine. So, who will fight the giant monster? Why, Silk, Vivienne, and Tsubomi, of course! Even if they don’t exactly want to do it.... This series is a parody of every Sentai show I can think of, with a definite H flavor – Sure, there’s a transformation rod... it’s even extendable... but it’s UFO man’s “rod”. And we’ve got your naked transformation sequence too... Just don’t mind the white stuff, dripping all over their... *ahem*. After going through all that, the girls only have a few minutes of fighting before the costume... begins to disappear like a knit stocking attacked by ravenous moths on crack. Holey Spandex on a preteen, Batman! Oh, and did UFO man forget to mention the girl’s powers are fueled by... embarrassment?! Yep, even gave it an acronym, too: M.O.E. Oh boy... Yes. All sorts of Sentai mocked in the worst manner possible, and always in a humorous, sexual way. This show garners a 16+ rating from me, if only for the rampant use of suggestive and blatant visuals and possibly underage characters (it is anime, though, so feel free to ignore the warning).

Characters:

Koharuno Silk is your typical ‘Girl Next Door’: shy, soft spoken, and easily embarrassed. She seems to be UFO man’s favorite of the three, and has a crush on Tsubomi’s older brother, Matoko. Silk gathers M.O.E. energy the easiest, and has thus far been the one to finally defeat all the monsters in the series (as of episode 7, at least). Ohtori Vivienne is an odd one. Taller than her friends (and even some of the adults shown so far), the curvaceous blonde seems to have a romantic thing for Silk. Strong and reserved, but fierce in combat, it would appear she was once told that a proper Japanese lady would never appear indecently in public... But that doesn’t keep her from lending a hand. She’s the first to get the ‘Ultimate Beam’ attack to work. Not that... Moroboshi Tsubomi didn’t try hard enough. Here’s to all you perverted Loli lovers out there (A, that is a double entendre; and B, you know who you are). Tsubomi is bold, energetic, a cosplay fanatic, and the only one of the three who is (thus far) unable to accumulate M.O.E. power due her complete inability to feel embarrassed at being seen naked in public. She’s the most excited of the three with the prospect of becoming a Super Heroine, but is also the least effective. Gambare anyway, Tsubomi-chan. UFO man: The girl’s benefactor (they seem to have left the manslaughter thing slide, thankfully), now in handy Chibi-size with custom flying pimp mobile. He seems both perverted and generally useless, until a monster appears, and then he’s really only good for his ‘rod’. You’d think, as a Super Hero that’s been vanquishing these knock-offs for a while now, he’d be full of useful advice and be more than willing to dispense it *before* it became important. But he isn’t (sigh). This series goes to show you that any person with a magical ‘rod’ can become a gigantic menace to society in three easy steps (yes, including Bukakke). Moroboshi Makoto is an avid cameraman, and as mentioned previously, is Tsubomi’s older brother. I can’t say much for his journalism skills, as all they ever show him doing is filming everything (I especially liked the scene where Tsubomi squeezes Silk’s breasts in the girl’s locker room on a lark, and Silk screams “You pervert monster!”; two seconds later, Matoko is there, taking pictures of everything. He even changes film and gets off another roll before asking where the monster is. When his sister informs him it was her all along, he nonchalantly exits the room... And then the shock of it all hits the girls in the locker room. Way to go, man :)). He rides a motorcycle and dresses like Ash Ketchem, and seems to have the same attitude. Gotta film ‘em all. Koharuno Mayu is Silk’s older sister, and a reporter that seems to only report on the doings of UFO man... and later, the Ultimate Girls. She suspects her sister, Silk, of being an Ultimate Girl, but lacks concrete proof. She’s always seen in the company of... Okamura-san: This old man is the “expert” on UFO man, and is called upon for his speculation on the Ultimate Girls, who he first named ‘UFO man P (Pichi Pichi)’. He does seem quite knowledgeable about the various monsters that have popped up thus far, but it seems all that would really require is an intimate knowledge of what’s on display on the shelves of the local wal-mart’s toy aisle.

Music:

The opening song/animation is kind of cute, though it didn’t make an appearance until the third episode. The rest of the back ground music is pretty much what you would expect of a Sentai show, although the transformation sequence music is fun, in a quirky upbeat way. There is no ending theme, just the preview for the next episode (unless Anime-Works has been chopping it off, doubtful that).

Animation:

The animation style is pretty standard. Nothing really stands out about it, but it’s not hideous, either. The animators have given the girls that ‘soft’ look, and I kinda like it. On a side note, at times the girl’s costumes will appear full of holes in one shot, and then be in one piece while they’re running towards the enemy, or jumping, what have you, only to appear in it’s disheveled state a moment later. I believe this was done intentionally, an animated ‘sight gag’ for the ‘stock footage’ most live action Sentai shows use. I find it amusing, at least.

Comments:

Overall rating, 7 out of 10. it amuses me, but I can’t watch more than three episodes at a time – the oddball humor and overall corniness gets to me. Also, as mentioned, I’d give it a 16+ rating for overall content. The girls never appear fully nude, or indecent, but it’s still adult humor. Definitely a watcher when you need something to put a silly grin on your face and a spring in your step.
