The Friendly FAQ - BitTorrent, IRC and More!

Have a technical problem? Before creating a thread about it, why not read up on common problems in here?

Dont know how torrents work? Just download and install bittorrent (I recommend BITCOMET or BitTornado) and just click the link like it was a normal http. The BT links on the BU releases page look like this: Image

If you need someone to hold your hand to figure out torrent downloading, read the Guide Melyanna posted.

Have a problem with your Torrent not working?

First off, BU doesn't manage torrents, they only post the links, so we suggest you check out the subber's site or tracker first to make sure there aren't any problems or announcements from their end.
You can find their sites by clicking the group name at the main BU site.

It's highly possible that the torrent has been taken down due to age/licencing/amalgamation into a batch. If it is an older torrent there may not currently be any seeds, once again see the groups website for how to request seeds.

Also, the tracker may not be working for some reason, don't freak out, it's usually a temporary problem. Just wait a while and your download should continue like normal. You can check for explanations of common errors at This site.

Torrent downloading really slow?

That is sad for you.

Some background info:
Seeding is a term used to describe people who have finished the download and are only uploading the file, sharing it with others. Leeching is a term used to describe those who are downloading, who may or may not be sharing. Uploading is the rate at which you are sharing the files with other people, and downloading is the rate at which you are recieving the data from others. How well seeded the torrent is will efect your download speed. Older torrents are usually much slower than new ones.

Hypothetically the more you share the more you get in return, however this is mostly wrong. Try playing with your max. uploads and see what happens. Limiting the number of uploads seems to increase people's download speed. I don't know why this is, and no I don't feel bad about leeching.

The best way to increase download speed is to pay for a better connection.

File not working right? Make sure you have all the correct codecs installed and a decent media player; we suggest you use VIDLAN since it plays almost anything and the codecs are included.

Can't find a BT link for series [X] on the BU site/What's a DVD label mean/what is CRC
Many releases for older series are DVD rips. Most of these files are only available via IRC - check the Group info section on the site to find where the groups are located. Some of them actually do have BTs, but BU doesn't link to them... because they are DVD rips. Again, check to see if the group has a website and see if the BT links are there.

CRC is the number you use to verify if the file you have downloaded is good or corrupt. Not a link to a file.

Don't know how to use irc for downloading? use this guide; http://www.kasshin.net/
it's easy to understand and should cover everything.

CANT FIND XYZ SERIES?
BEFORE asking about it try to check out BOXTORRENTS It requires registration but I'm sure you wont regret it.
Post any other questions here.

For router woes

http://www.portforward.com

It shows how to open specific ports for specific routers. Actually it seems to cover just about all routers. It also shows what ports to use for each program.

Big thanks to Cataulin for pointing this out.
