Licensed anime releases

Postby molitar » Thu Dec 08, 2005 8:57 pm

I'm really getting sick of these big companies. Licensing so many titles that nobody will see them for months possibly years and than go after the fansubbers subbing them. Secondly some episodes since they only release a lousy 3 to 4 episodes per DVD with a single DVD a month will never ever finish seeing the light of day after all look at how many episodes some of these anime's are. Than on top of that the over charging of these DVD's at $25-30/ea.
I personally got so sick of it I quit purchasing anime altogether and just watch the fansubs mostly. How do they get away with charging upwards of $7/per episode which is actually only around 20 minutes after the opening and closing is done? That is approximately $42.00 for 2 hours of entertainment even Hollywood can't get away with charging that much for a single movie and even at dvd release it isn't even half that much usually. Yet we anime fans shell out these ridiculous amounts of cash for them. If they charged reasonable they would have more people purchasing more anime and in the end most likely make more money from more sales.

Let's not forget that most of the anime they sell are cheap dubs.

how do they get away with charging X amount of dollars a disk?
they trick people who don't know business into thinking its wrong downloading it or watching it for free and people keep on buyin em
its sort of like how the cost of living in NY is so high
as long as people are in high paying jobs and keep buying oranges for 2-5 dollars an orange, they won't lower the costs

Hell...As long as its profits, these companies don't give a ****ing damn about the viewers. As long as the money comes in, nothing else matters for them. <_<

hate to break it to ya, but when you run a business, your primary purpose is to MAKE MONEY. If you don't like the prices they are charging, then don't buy them. But asking companies not to try making money is like asking someone to stop breathing.

Its funny, I used to buy DVD's all the time however since I discovered bittorrent I rarely buy any DVD's. I think the last two series I bought were Noir and Berserk.
I seek to do my best in all of life's endeavors.
It doesn't always work though Dammit.

Noir bored me...

anyway I think the price per episode is an interesting point. Compare this to the price it costs (last i heard) to download an episode of Lost via iTunes in the US (though i live in the UK T_T). i think it was $1.30, and either cheaper than that if you buy the series togeather! ok so its at the smaller size but if you argue that you could argue that should anime companies decided to perhaps provide the "cheap alternative" version it would be a bigger seller.

its interesting you talk about profits, but its not always about selling high and maintaining customers. for example say they did knock the price down to $1.30 an episode...this is a completely reasonable price in my eyes...and i would gladly start buying anime again. now think if i would, how many others would start as well, assuming they are making a profit at $1.30 they could actually end up with bigger profits overall through more sales.

all of this doesnt matter however for one good reason. blu-ray! soon the time will come when an entire 51 epsiode anime will quite easily fit on a single blu-ray disc. as far as i know the reason prices are so high on current anime is because they keep stretching it over many dvds, though blu-ray will be more expensve than a dvd at first, i doubt one will be more expensive than 9 DVDs

Well, that's basic Economics Ris. The entire point behind pricing is a balance of suply and demand. They can raise the price if people are willing to pay for it.

If you raise the price, you make more money per sale, but less people will buy it. If you lower the price, more people will buy but you make less profit per sale. They are driven to find a balance that works best for them, at the peak of the triangle, and guess who puts them there.

We do. Because we continue to pay for it.

The only anime I know that was priced right was Robotech I was purchasing them for $13-15/ea and they each had 6 episodes on them. That was a fair price and both I and my friend purchased the entire set. I know many others picked up that set also for the nostalgia of the series they use to watch on Tv when they were younger. Fair price and they sold many.

Want to talk about being ripped off, how about 30 dollars for each FLCL DVD?

there are 3 DVDs

2 episodes per DVD

thats 15 bucks an episode!

thats almost 100 bucks for 6 episodes!

thats more than what most 13 and 26 episode series boxsets cost!!

Japanese DVD prices are more ridiculous. You can end up paying $50 for 1 ep.

You should buy those hong kong boxsets that charge like $10 for a whole series. Also it is a bonus when they are decent subbed and dvd ripped.

The problem with that is that some of their subs are horrible.....I bought one of those once and sometimes the subtitles would dissapear altogether.
It's a hit or miss with those.
