Mushishi

So yeah! It's cool. I don't have anything to talk about XD but I wanted to ask about the name...
蟲師
hope I got the kanji right o_o
but yeah... 蟲, in my awesome dictionary, just means "bug" (plural? Jap is weird)... same as "虫" and I was wondering if there are more subtle meanings to it, and as to why the series creators have just called them bugs o_o

C1 subs called him a "mushi collector" too, as I'm sure you know. This is interesting.

Mushishi means "master of mushi" "one who commands mushi" somewhere along that lines.

Now the more difficult question, two mushi characters mean the same thing as far as my knowlege and dictionaries go. Though the plural one that is used in Mushishi is the old character that isn't really used anymore.

Other than that there are many metaphores that use the word "bug" in Japanese language, maybe the use of "mushi" has something to do with those metaphoric uses. Or maybe I'm thinking too much.

ex: "Hara no mushi ga osamaranai"
Translation: Bug in my stomach is not calming down
Use: when you are agitated about something and need to set it straight.

ex: "warui mushi ga tsuku"
translation: bad bug getts attached
use: when undesirabl guy is dating a girl, that's how parents refer to him

ex: "mushi ga ii"
translation: bug is good
use: annoyingly selfish

ex: "yowamushi" "nakimushi"
translation: weakling crybaby

Oh wow, thanks for the random uses :)
So.. it is probably quite a deliberate use of "bug" o_o .. which is interesting in that.. well.. like, how these mushi seem to destroy people o_o and turn them into ghosts and stuff... but they're in no way evil, they're just more simple things. Um, and how they all exist as one group, not really as a singular. not often anyway. Maybe that goes with the somehow.

That whole thing about them not being evil... not even intelligent as such, but somehow.. like.. sinister >_> or unfathomable, yea,h good word.. I'm liking that mood. yessir.

What an interesting series o-o!

--oh yeah... japanese people get bugs in their stomach, english people get butterflies o_O

I know it's been a while since this topic was addressed, but why make a new topic with the same name?

Anywho, Mushishi 14 made me say "wow...just...wow" The whole hybrid thing seems expected, but i could have never imagined they way they incorporated it like they did. That should bring some more humanistic Mushi later on yeah. At the end i was like holy crap they both died! It also gave me a warm feeling (all tingley inside) when he finally saw the white bamboo again, and then chimes in the crying of babies....just awesome!

ok, that's my rant ^_^

The sad bits surely are there just to emphasise the 'there is no good or evil' morality. The mushi often lead to the death of individuals but they aren't innately hostile to humans. Ginko treats them with respect and maintains the balance and co-existance of humans and mushi.

Woo, ep 17 was lovely.

I'd be surprised if Ginko doesn't die or become absorbed by the mushi somehow at the end of the series. Well, I guess he won't if there's plenty more of the manga. But it'd make a good conclusion none-the-less.
