I just don't like small mouthed characters. It really gives me goose bumps. I immediately associate them with dirty thoughts that I can't say here.

And more generally, I like slender figures. That's why... In fact... I really appreciate the Men's Thread. :D

Is it me or in anime, girls are almost all stereotyped ? I can think of dozen of girls in mangas that are (flat) slender but in animes...

Yeah, I've noticed that. o_o I'm guessing it comes down to producers saying that bigger breasts = a more popular anime. I really don't know though.
Well, actually, I don't really read much manga. I did notice the tendency for anime girls to have big breasts though.

well i think that anime women tend to be drawn to have features that japanese women wish they had but don't. Notice larger breasts and bigger eyes, while japanese women tend to have smaller breasts and eyes then white people.

Isn't it more what japanese men would like ? =P

But well, I agree about the breast (and the butt... which tend to be flat in reality... >.> ) but about the eyes I'm not too sure. I mean, even if the taste of the public was of course involved, I think it's more like the bigger the eyes, the easier it was to depict emotions. I think it's why Tezuka* and his followers (just EVERY mangaka ^^) adopted this.

*If I remember well, he was influenced by Disney a lot and when he began to draw shoujo he even exagerated that style too make it cuter. ^^

That's just insulting and misinformed.

Just to add,
also since early animation was created at 7 fps and sometimes even 4, the big eyes did help get the point across.

It also has the secondary effect of makeing characters more cute and childlike since different parts of the body develop at different rates. Similiar to the idea of looking at a puppy's paws to see how large it will grow.

For instance, most babies have tiny button noses and proportionally larger eyes.

Its based on Freudian principles, a bit like lara croft:
Large eyes like babies, so you have to take care of them
Good hip to but ration, good for kids
Large breasts, supposedly also good for kids
and weapons are something to compensate for lack of a penis. It traumatises boys in their youth apparently when they realise their mother lacks a penis.

I think most of that is BS, but whatever.

That, I didn't know but it makes sense.

As for Disney's influence, I've just read it again not too long ago when I was looking for reviews of Kimba (Lion King's controversy, etc...).

...ummmm... why?

The assumption that japanese women want to be more like white women physically.

I could argue that americans are more obsessesed with large cartoon like breast sizes since plastic surgery is more prominent here.

and the point was implied before that there are more male than female animators, so I didn't even know where a japanese woman's perspective was even considered.

you always want what you can't have. Same reason why that blond hair-dye craze hit korea.

i thought a lot of the hentai artists were women?

well the thing is, you can have it.

frankly, looking at the japanese music, movie, even the freaking porn industry,
I just don't see a lot of boob jobs or eye surgery.

And dying your hair could mean anything really.

There was recently a black hair dye/straightening fad that went around my school with the girls. Curiosity, I guess?

Why else would they color their hair blond, when they have beautiful, heavy, thick Japanese hair? And on average asians do have smaller breasts, asses, and are shorter in general. Those are facts, not generalization, there is nothing bad about it. I know many many guys that drool over asian beauties.

For the statistics of sizes, I don't have them so I won't argue on that. When I was talking about flat breasts and flat butts, I was talking, myself, on a world basis.

But for the blond color I think it's a little bit far fetched on just one element.

Because there's one thing I can bet my life on : all japanese don't have beautiful, heavy, thick (...) hair. They're just like everybody else, most of them have normal hair, not so beautiful, not so thick. There's bald japaneses, japaneses with thin hair, with a lot of different tint, with slightly naturally curly hair, etc, etc...

In those conditions, I think the use of dye is just a world-wide habit (and fashion) from which japaneses are not free. And it's an habit that doesn't seem to be so common.

I mean, besides cogals... I didn't see a lot of blond haired people. And I think, one can't make conclusions on just a small part of a population. It's like if japaneses thought that europeans all want to look asian because they meet a bunch of gothic teenagers with black dyed hair.

Well, yea, but it's just so sad to see the ones that do dye them into an ugly orange color... it's just such a waste... *sob*

And yea, I guess about coloring hair tendencies that does happen worldwide. It's just that Japanese natural hair color is black with minor variations, so when they dye it to anything else it is extra noticeble.

when i started the whole blond hair-dye talk, i was referring to koreans not japanese. Go visit korea. It's insane. Heck their entire soccer team might as well be scandinavian, their all blondes :p

i'm not trying to sterotype asians or anything. I'm asian myself so i'm allowed to do it lol . It's kinda the same reason why only black people can call each other niggers without insult, while if you're not black and you say it, get ready for a beating.

I was in Seoul just last summer, and I haven't seen a single person on the street with dyed blonde hair.
not even in the uni areas.

It's nowhere near as popular as you think.
