what happned to anime?

Postby 3dsmatt » Mon Dec 28, 2009 3:17 am

Its been a while since I last saw an anime. In fact I've almost completely switched to manga because I was getting tired of the quality of anime being realesed. tired of all the cliches, fan service, Poor animtion and key framing, bad voice acting, and too many fillers. What happened?

Animes that I really enjoyed:

series:
cowboy beebop
FLCL
ghost in the shell
Trigun
Eureka 7
FMA

OVA/Movie:
Pale cocoon OVA
Macross 0 OVA
5 centimeters per second
The place promised in our early days

since I haven't been keeping up with everything, has there been any good series released close to the style or quality of the above list?

Get over it. Maybe there haven't been many good series in the last year or two, but there are still a few. The bulk of it was crap back in the Bebop/GITS era too.

Actually, this got me thinking. There hasn't been anything really good this year at all.
Hmmmm. OP is right-ish.

I agree with the most of it was always crap rule too. I just wonder if the current crap just got crappier with today's producers of crap regurgitating yesterday's crap. Say with current creators growing up watching DBZ and producing Naruto/Bleach/OP (I like OP though) then seeing something like Fairy Tail being made.

I'm not so sure about the "current creators creating crap because they grew up on crap" thing; I think that the only thing governing what makes it to the "animated" stage is prospective sales figures and likelihood of making profits. I mean, there must be thousands of rubbish mangas, good mangas, dark and edgy, original, amazing and bizarre mangas aroudn which can be purchased and animated, but the producers are only funding the generic ones at the moment. Mostly. There are some really offbeat ones mixed in, but idk... not really sure what makes somethign a real gem. Though I could perhaps almost call Trapeze really good... perhaps.. nah, but it was well out of left field and was quite entertaining. Yah, I liked it. No final episode subs though o_o

Wow rambling man is rambling.

So: upcoming Satoshi Kon + Madhouse work:

I realize you're rambling and that you may already realize this, but there seems to be a contradiction. Because Trapeze, something that is experimental, aimed at an adult audience, and seemly limited merchandizing potential exists and from Toei, who also produces the opposite. Also not every anime is a manga adaptation.

I tend to think that some studios make manga adaptations so they can produce their own original/signature work. Say Gainax making He Is My Master so they can make Gunbuster 2.

Sure, profit governs a lot, but I just don't see it as the only factor.

just some advice to op

-follow anime from Noitamina timeslot(excluding crappy Nodame sequels cuz it's directed by Chiaki Kon)
-follow anime by Production IG, Madhouse, Studio 4C, or Brains Base (and sometimes, but not always, Bones)

seriously, this is the only requirement for me to follow anime each season nowadays, well I do watch anime b/c of my favorite voice actors too but i start to ignore that now

I hadn't thought about using the timeslot as a guide before.

Got any handy "what's-in-which-timeslot" listings, Kasuga? :3

I don't think it's anime's fault, I think you just got tired of it. Is this the first time that you get tired of something? I go through phases constantly; Si-Fi phase, detective phase, mystery phase, action phase, historical novel phase... I read a lot of similar thing, get tired of it and move on. Now I'm back into Si-Fi phase and reading a lot of Heinlein, but I'm getting tired of it again.
Also you probably matured some, and so have your taste. You might not like anime types you might have liked two years ago. Have you tried re-watching Trigun lately? Are you sure you still like it? Maybe it's time for you to try watching the anime type you've never paid attention to before, like Mushishi (although that's pretty old), or Spice and Wolf that isn't action?

Also I disagree, there have been several very good series in the last couple of years.

Gurren Lagann - action/comedy - I liked this one, because it didn't take itself too seriously.
Kekkaishi - supernatural/action - the character development was very well done (or maybe I just like this genre).
One Outs - baseball/mind-games - had "Akagi" quality to it, and was just simply awesome, although it took 2-3 episodes to get into it.
Spice and Wolf - slice of life/economics/mind-games - it had very unique atmosphere to it.

And if you liked GitS and Cowboy Bebop, why don't you try older titles like Black Lagoon.

PS. I just found out that there is Black Lagoon OVA coming out in 2010 ! Woo-Hoo!

awesome, I was wondering for awhile if it's gonna be actual series or not, since after story arcs covered in season 2, the manga had recently completed only one very very long arc about the return of killer maid

Black Lagoon doesn't really have much in common with Gits and Bebop, does it? o_O

no it doesn't, but it's got some subtle existentialist messages too :/

Does it? I never finished watching past .. um.. maybe ep 10 or so, idk. I may have started the second season; did the stories flow together as if it was one full 26 ep series?

I felt that it was of a similar feel, although not very similar atmosphere. It's worth a try.
