Were it not for the Distribution of Fansubbed Anime, I Do Believe that MANY of the series (that have now become licenced), would actually have a MUCH Smaller following than they currently have...

IMHO, the Distribution of Fansubbed Anime actually HELPS to promote the sales of the Licenced versions, once they become available...

Case in point, "Dragon Drive"... (a series that I first discovered right here on Baka-Updates)... I started downloading the Fansubs, and found the series to be quite enjoyable.
I have ALL of the DD Fansubs (including some Extras that you Won't find in the Release)... When the Series eventually became Licensed, and available on DVD, I IMMEDIATELY BOUGHT THE ENTIRE RETAIL BOXED SET!!!... Why? Because if I hadent already SEEN the Fansubbed version, I probably wouldn't even have been interested in getting it in the First place...

FUNimation: You may want to reconsider the potential value of the Fansub community... They are NOT your Enemy.

fansubbers don't own the rights to anything, distributing the original video (from japan) is already a copyright infringement
but now we are in a way helping (by letting users know via linking) in distributing the files
if you really think you are in the right, then go start your own shit and have funimation go after you and just dispute their claims in court.

Im not saying i wouldn't of done exactly what you've done so far colje; really you did the smart thing watching your back. just saying it doesnt hurt to educate yourself in these situations (which it seems you've already done).

If all torrent sites went down tomorrow I'd laugh my ass off.
Then I'd go download my anime on irc/ddl/usenet/ftp/etc while the rest of the loudmouthed cancer that has been filling up the internet as of late whines to their online friends, or throws around empty threats and meaningless resolutions "never to buy anime from them ever" or something equally inane.

Basically it boils down to this: they're right and we're wrong, dont even try to loophole out of it. Now, how much you care about this fact is up to you. Personally, I'm perfectly fine in my moral vacancy and I could give a shit if those I should be paying tribute to toil in hunger.

man i remember when my brother had to scourer the interwebs for online anime rings to get on a mailing list so we could watch some bootleg vhs anime... and basically thats what it comes down to, there are the casuals who do it till they can get away with it then bail, and then theres the people who will never stop even if we have to go back to square one

They did this because they were launching their special one piece "simulcast" and they wanted all the attention to go to them. After putting out a low video quality version with an obnoxious watermark, they've decided they don't want to do it anymore because someone accessed their site early and put their sub of it on the net before the actual japanese version aired. Funimation is an absolute disgrace to the anime industry

As anime fans know, FUNimation Entertainment and Toei Animation had planned for the first ever online simulcast of the series ‘One Piece’ tonight at 9:00 pm CDT., just one hour after its premiere on Japan’s Fuji Television. Unfortunately, in the last 24 hours we have determined that the FUNimation servers were compromised, even though we employ strict security standards. An unknown individual accessed and posted episode 403 online and as a direct result of this illegal act, all U.S. and Canadian fans will be deprived of access to this great anime series for the immediate future. We will make every effort to locate and prosecute the perpetrator(s) to the fullest extent of the law and will provide updates regarding this most serious matter.

First off, the funmation guy in the link Kasuga gave is what I imagine the idiots that like the shounen crap funmation licenses to look like.. It's fucking scary though and makes me wonder if anyone could really look so deformed..

Seems like every time I check the site for torrents the series are still listed for quite a long time before they're removed.

I don't blame Bakaupdates for their choice to remove Funimation torrents. I see no reason why they would have disregarded Funimation's request.

As a professional web developer, baka-updates is doing the wrong thing. For starters, baka-updates does not host nor maintain their own tracker. They are simply providing links to external sources. PirateBay does not do this. Google does this. You would first have to ask them how indexing links to external sources is any different than google, seeing as how the only real case they could ever make is against each individual tracker or fansub group.

This is a dangerous precedent to set. What next, companies start demanding you stop linking to fansub groups, because they are doing things they deem illegal? Oh how about the forums, there is talk here about how to go find these files they deem illegal. This is a slippery slope that is only going to get worse, because now you've set a precedent that anything related to what they deem illegal could be asked for removal.

There is nothing illegal about external hyperlinks and there never will be except with a precedent like this setup. An analogy to this situation would be if there were some discussion about terrorism and you decided to link directly to known terrorist organization websites; however, you were then asked for them to be removed due to their content.

so, yeah. my internet service was canceled today. according to my provider; Cox Communications, for file sharing licensed materials. More specificly for BTing Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom. I don't have any intention of downloading licensed materials, but I didn't see that mentioned in the list on the front page of the cease and desist list. just an fyi to the BU people that they should also add this one and remove the torrent links. looking on the funimation site, they have already started streaming it and hold the american rights for that (according to thier blog).

did it seem that way? coulda sworn I just gave an example of what's happened to me, so others are aware. The minor research I did to find out why it happened, and cited such information as I found. Then gave a suggestion on how others can avoid it, and making the admins of BU aware of a possible risk to themselves. Damned annoying losing my net then having to argue with my provider to get it reinstated.
