Was reading another running online argument about pc's vs macs. The usual vicious namecalling from pc users, the usual meaningless us vs them arguments from mac users who don't realize macs are actually pc's...

My only real beef with macs in the past has been their horrible overpricing....so I decided to check the prices now and see how they stacked up.

wtf, it got worse. The cheapest imac desktop i found on newegg was $1500....for the same specs i can put together the exact same system, peripherals and operating system included, for $650...laptops were also twice as expensive...

I just wanna say that if a car salesman puts some shiny spinning rims on a car and tells you the car now costs double, and you buy it.....>_>

It doesn't quite work out that way. Sure, you can build your own Mac ala Hackintosh, but it's just going to perform differently. All I'm saying is that's not an accurate comparison.

I got a D. and with us a D isn't considered a pass and it isn't considered a fail either. and this class is a prerequisite for another class i need to take.

how is it going to perform differently? Same hardware, same OS....Now I can see it being a problem if there's a lack of mac drivers for generic hardware, but that's even more reason not to pay such an outrageous markup.

I'll tell you a funny story
One day I was randomly walking around a shop called Loft that sell various stuff like stationery and stupid stuff meant to be sold as gifts for stupid teenagers that have no idea what to buy for their stupid friends, or stuff to decorate your room in, etc...Then I came upon a piece of small bookmark made of paper...it costs almost a 100 Baht (almost $3) and I thought "WTF this piece of crappy paper with mediocre or hardly any design cost this much..ppl actually buy it?"

I MEAN IT'S JUST A DAMN PIECE OF PAPER THAT YOU CAN'T USE IT FOR ANYTHING BUT MARKING BOOKS!!! EVEN MY AWESOME LOOKING LOTR BOOKMARK SET IS FREE!!!111one!!!!

So if there's a reason people actually buy bookmarks then it's probably true to anyone that would pay for expensive, but equally or less productive as its cheaper counterpart, stuff.

@Mystic: oh I see...I get a couple of D+ and I always think 'fuck this shit, at least I'm more fortunate than other people in the countryside.' It's a way of consoling myself, lol.

I don't think you're thinking of the same hardware. For one, it's very likely it's not the same mobo. You just need to get that that's significant, it's not going to work as is. If you're interested you can look up Hackintosh. It's not a word I made up, there are people that had the same thought and build/hack their own machines. It's doable, but it's just not easy.

I would like to point out that I have a hard time believing you've included everything the IMac offers. Things like a monitor, a camera, even a keyboard and mouse cost something. Then otherwise it's a bogus comparison.

Now, I'm not saying there's no mark up and everything is 100% justifiable. Just not to the degree I think you're trying to make it out to be.

Thought Psystar was worth a mention, they make mac clones. The prices look cheap but you're getting seriously low balled. It ends up not being that cheap or that good.

Why does it matter if it's the same mobo or not? Is it some amazing special apple mobo that has magical features? This wasn't some top-of-the-line machine i was copying here...it was the cheapest imac and the specs showed. Here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883104033

I did not say that I picked out the parts with the exact same model numbers; I picked out my own specs that matches that imac's spec for spec; same speed core 2 duo processor (actually a little better clockspeed), same 2600HD video card that they offered, same size (actually bigger) internal harddrive with the same disk rw speed, same spec ram, except a full 2gb stick and not the 2 1gb sticks the imac had. The mobo wasn't specified so i went out and selected one that could handle the processor set and video card.

peripherals = mouse, keyboard, webcam, speakers, monitor (same size).

I don't know why you have a hard time believing it. This imac I was price matching had relatively low-end specs. At $1500 it is outrageously priced.

I know you like apples, we've been through this before. And they are stylish and have that same cool factor that made ipods such a hit. But they possess no special abilities that justify a double-price markup. And keep in mind that for years big companies like Dell have actually provided full systems at prices equally competitive to building your own computer, warranty included...meaning apple's computers aren't just double markup over my system, but they are double markup over what anybody who knew nothing about computers could buy on the market. Even if you include say, $200 dollars worth of warranty as part of the price, it's STILL double cost.

Different OS's do different things, perform differently, require different things. That should be blatantly obvious and it seems like you don't get this. Not so obvious, you can't go spec by spec and expect OSX to run. It requires specific hardware. When I said same, I meant same, not kinda. Do you still believe you can install XP no an intel mac the same on a pc? It's almost like putting in a playstation disc in a viao and assuming it's going to work the same since they're both made by sony. Otherwise it's all "ching chong nip nong, all look same".

Now I had mentioned a community and a company that produces physical working examples of OSX running on non-apple hardware. Knowing that I know this, do you honestly expect me to take stock in a theoretical build from someone who has to ask me what's the significance of a motherboard?
