Seinen manga lover says: recommend me an anime! (please)

Postby thedavemc » Mon Sep 01, 2008 11:22 am

Herro, I've been reading scanlated manga like crazy for the past couple of years but I'm so out of touch with anime I haven't got a clue what's good these days - used to be into it in the 90s and watched most of the classics released in the UK back then.

So I wondered if you guys could help me out and recommend something. I like stuff that has strong characters and plot, preferably with excellent animation and action. Other than that don't mind, could be mecha, samurai, invisible space ninjas or whatever :)

Here are my favourite manga:
Berserk
Vagabond
Claymore
Gantz
Monster
Shigurui
Holyland
Eden
Akira
Lone Wolf & Cub

I've seen the berserk, claymore, shigurui and gantz animes and found them all a bit disappointing compared to the mangas. So I guess I'm looking for something that makes the most of the anime format... my old faves all felt like they did something special that wouldn't come across on a page.

My favorite anime from back in the day:
Akira
Ninja Scroll
Battle Angel Alita
Fist of the North Star

Anyway any suggestions gratefully received
Cheers!

It's still pretty general, so try checking out this recommendation database,

Monster is quite good for an anime, follows the manga quite well and the animation is decent...I mean it's made by madhouse so I kinda have faith in that

if you're really into seinen, then you shouldn't miss stuff like
Ghost in the Shell (the movie version and the Standalone Complex version are all awesome)
Serial Experiment Lain
Paranoia Agent
Samurai Champloo
Gurren Lagann
Akagi
Mushishi
Wolf and Spice

oh heck there's lots of it..but those are decently good seinen stuff so yah

on the other note, I love seinen manga too, 'specially those written by Naoki Urasawa, can't wait for 20th CB live action whee

Cheers for your suggestions, particularly KasugaSan - I have started downloading most of your list and just watched the first episode of Akagi, which was excellent (especially the soundtrack). Nice one :)

Further ideas gratefully received, maybe something swordy? :)

Akagi is super excellent. Check out Kaiji afterwards too: it was drawn by the same dude and it's pretty similar, but the show goes in a different kind of direction.

Swords... idk. Shigurui anime? There's been a bit of a dearth of teh swords animes lately.
I always suggest Mushishi, Kino no Tabi and Initial D to everyone. The first two are rather more slow-moving than your standard action violence fare though.

Oh! Yeah, Seirei is cool... it's fantasy swordy stuff of quite high class.

Thanks for the further suggestions - I watched Seirei to about halfway through already but have to admit I got a little bored (though the animation and (infrequent) action was great) a bit too much 'balsa nee-san!' for my liking :)
Emetic - I will check out you suggestions, thanks for that.

Cool, but I'm just saying I like them. I don't have any idea if you would.

Death note - finished - fast paced thriller, very psychological.

Soul Eater - on going - If your into loli-con gothic scythe action check it out.

Only things that come to mind that havent already been recomended.
