Video games that SHOULD be movies.

So even though movies made from video games tend to be crap...

what video games do you think would make awesome movies?

MGS4 was the best videogame movie I've seen. Pretty long though. It was about a 9 hour movie.

I can't think of any videogames that I would translate into movies. Not just because of the stigma attached, but because I don't trust videogame writers at all, and most games have mediocre plots.

None?

Games are made with a player in mind... that's why they don't translate well.

Can anyone even think of any good ones? All I can think of are terribad ones...

Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, DOA, Super Mario, Hitman, Tomb Raider, BloodRayne, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Doom, Wing Commander?

Lol
Well, you could list that many terrible superhero movies or teen movies or Nightmare on Elm Street movies. idk, I think there is potential for a good video game movie. Like, um, ... duno. Pac-man.

what's this about a 9 hour MGS movie o-o is it soe kind of joke o-o

anime based on games aren't that great too :(

Advent Children had a terrible story, and even then it is by and far the best video game movie made so far.

What I'm saying is, there are no good video game movies.

I watched Metal Gear Solid 4 as a string of movies. Some guys recorded their play through and edited out most of the gameplay, leaving in tact boss fights, vehicles and essential stretches of play. Each act was between 1.5 and 2 hours. So it was basically watching it as a movie, and it didn't cheapen the experience at all.

Two downsides. The dude playing sucked and the other dude encoded it as wmv even though the file sizes were the same as they would have been with avi. ):

Silent Hill was better than every other video game movie I've seen... I'll give it that.

Sign of things to come? Fingers crossed.

Well, yeah, but I'd say they're doing a better job with the superhero movies than they are with the video game movies.

Forgot about Advent Children. Also OK, but only from a fanservice POV... like you said... the story was pretty pathetic.

FF10 was a movie-in-a-game too... like 10 billion hours of cutscenes and short snippets of actual gameplay. That's how it felt to me anyways.

From what the guys at Marvel told me, they have a lot more creative control on their new movies, and once they put out the Captain America movie and Ant Man movies, Avengers will be next on the docket.

As far as video game movies go.... they should never be made. NEVER

Well just because every single video game-movie made so far has sucked extremely bad doesn’t mean that a good one couldn’t be made...

I blame Hollywood’s application of it, for some reason they feel the need to change key things to the story for seemingly no reason. Which always pisses off the hardcore fans...

Then there is always the extremely cheesey moments where they try and emulate the game play into the movie (Like all the first-person camera work in the DOOM and House of the Dead movies)

And with all the next-gen CGI work and longer cut scenes in games these days video games are becoming more movie-like everyday.

So even though Hollywood’s short sightedness has caused every one of these movies to suck would it be to hard to imagine a good one could be made?

yes it is too hard to imagine. I have put some thought into this before and I came to this conclusion:

1) You must have a good director

2) That director has to not only be good, but he ALSO has to have played the game in question in order to understand how to make a good film out of it.

Now ask yourself: What are the chances that a video-game movie can a) attract a great director and b) attract a great director that also has played that video game?

the odds are pretty low.

What was up with that final fantasy: the spirits within movie o-o it seems like square could make a great movie if they wanted to. but they haven't. FF:advent children was indeed an awful movie. It had cool graphics though.
idk. I'm no huge fan of final fantasy 7, so I don't know if I'm in the best place to judge, but I think it was retarded and boring.

9 hours of mgs cutscenes played by a crap dude sounds hard to sit through. I guess it's one of those things which is cool for fans only... which, I suppose, is the problem with all video game movies so far?

and how did we get to talking about Marvel movies and such? Gah. Captain AMerica.

Listen. Video game studios rarely hire professional writers to do things like writing up a good story and characters for the rest of the team to follow. They're usually borrowed ideas that are melded with others and tampered to the Director's vision, often times emerging as mediocre piles of dog shit.

If ever there was studio that did hire a team of writers to make an awesome story, then and only then would it be possible for an equally awesome movie to be made.

I think that all video games -- for the most part -- should stay video games. I've seen some pretty bad renditions in my day. :swt:

Okay but what if say... Hideo Kojima were to do a MGS movie himself?

o-o what a cool game!

Yeah... the movie would totally have dudes. and talking. Which would not be much like the game.

It would be weird if they made a movie with a dude riding his horse for 30 minutes then finding a boss and running in circles for 10 minutes watching what he does o-o then climbing around on it, falling off, getting frustrated trying to get on his horse for a while then checkign out nearby walls to see if they're climbable o-o That would be a weird movie.

and thus they should not make a movie
