The Place Promised in Our Early Days

Was watching an AMV that stirred my curiousity. It also made me want to get back inot watching anime (last thing I saw was Tengen Toppa).
Have I missed much?

Makoto Shinkai (the guy that did Hoshi no Koe)... can't go wrong, really. This was his first movie which had a decent budget behind it.

I liked it. Not very exciting but I think you'll notice a distinct improvement in his ability to draw faces (compared to hoshi no koe)

i had mixed feelings. it's absolutely drop dead gorgeous, that's for sure. the music is also outstanding, and in general it has the same stunning quality that hoshi no koe had.

on the other hand, it drags out with very uneven pacing, and strange scene changes (it reminded me a lot of watching the last 10 minutes of the last lord of the rings movie).

i feel like had it been a one hour movie, it would have been a lot more effective.

that being said if you haven't seen anything from shinkai, i'd definitely suggest first watching hoshi no koe (voices of a distant star), as it's short, tragic, and very impactful (and still gorgeous)

Isn't that the point? The sweet never tastes as sweet without the sour.

Actually I think the downside of most of Shinkai's works are the characterization, it lacked unique personality and development.

Otherwise, the art and theme really make up for it.

I kinda wish that one day he could have a chance to collaborate with Miyazaki

That's interesting. Because I have most enjoyed Shinkai's understated / believable characterisation. Sure his art is nice but he'd really benefit from a team of in-between animators.

Miyazaki produces smooth animation with his hordes of minions, but he has fuck all clue how to make realistic characters these days. He's really only interested in the epic and he seems to be marketing for the Westerners as much as within Japan.

Gonna agree with mrharvest here. I always felt like Miyazaki's stories were more focused on the world(s), whereas Shinkai's stuff seems to revolve around the characters themselves.
