I've been trying rTorrent recently, as this allows me to run torrents on my FreeBSD server while my workstation is turned off. It also allows me to remote login from work and manage my downloads.
It works very well and even runs inside the "screen" app.

I was pleased with BitComet for a long time, but recently i started running rtorrent on FreeBSD (To those who don't know what that is: FreeBSD is much like Linux but even more geeky.)
It works very well, and i can remote log in to it.

Azures. It has nice interface. However, people with old, weak PCs won't like it so much

it runs fine on a sub-1GHz 1/4GB RAM pc as long as you're not doing anything super intensive at the same time. The development staff are cleaning it up and lowering resource needs all the time. Which is why it has to update itself so often.

windows: utorrent
osx: transmission
i used azureus on both systems in the past but since it pretty memory demanding, i solely use the other clients mentioned above for each system.
i have probably more than hundred torrents loaded in utorrent but it doesn't slow down my pc whereas azureus did that with just a few torrents loaded.
utorrent is also probably the fastest client i have ever used.
transmission does also a great job on osx since it's fast and reliable.
the issues with azureus problem stem from the fact that it uses java.

rtorrent+screen
It's fairly lightweight (cli only) and works well with screen (can detach and logout and it runs in the background.)
Another plus is I can login through ssh and check it during the day if I need to. I try not to have Windows machines with active services on the 'net.
