The Thousandfold Thought by R. Scott Bakker
The final book in Bakker's epic The Prince of Nothing trilogy. Ever heard one of those cliches that implies that the technique is perfect but that it's lacking soul? That's how I felt at the end of this series.

From a technical standpoint the series is masterfully written. Bakker's way of weaving the philosophy into the story by making it a central theme was so seamless it made me reevaluate my opinion of other writers in the fantasy/philosophy genre.

So where does the "soul" come into it? Its characters. Bakker doesn't do a great job of making us sympathize or empathize with his characters. In fact, it's almost like Bakker wants us to dislike every character in his series.

Bakker also has a tendency to start writing scenes as if he were writing history. No point of view, no imaginable inflection, just straight facts. This is fine for some of the more unimportant events that occur, but when you're in the midst of the story's climax it's hardly enthralling to start narrating like this. Had he written these scenes from the perspective of one of the characters it probably would've had a lot more impact.

Anyways, the series was somewhat of a chore for me as a result, but I will say this... the ending (namely the last chapter) was absolutely superb.

Currently reading Renegade's Magic by Robin Hobb. I'm about halfway through. I'm quite convinced that The Soldier's Son trilogy is her best work to date, though I'll wait until the ending to make my final decision.

Also got Reaper's Gale (Steven Erikson) waiting for me once I finish RM. This guy brings out books so damn fast.

So liek I've just finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

the only chapter that can made me cry was the chapter dedicated to Snape, not because it was touching only but also because he's the ONLY well-rounded and complex character in the book

the climax was ok...but how it ended was lame...I think that Voldemort and the Death Eaters are the stupidest villains ever created in teh history of....uh...book making...yeah

on the side-note: this book reminded me of The One Ring, Doraemon's 4 dimensional bag, the whole idea of excalibur in the lake thing, etc.

Hah. I feel sorry for any Harry Potter fans that haven't finished yet and read this. But... then again... I don't much care for HP and I'm a caustic bastard, so... giggle.
