Detective Conan is really popular in Japan. Or at least was a couple of years back, I don't know if it still is.

I believe it still grabs good ratings.

There's normally a handful of family shows that run on forever and grab the top ratings spots. Sazae-san has reigned for over 30 years now. The top shounen shows don't do as well comparatively in that dept.

Elfen Lied and Full Metal Panic got me hooked. I've never watched the animes they have on Adult Swim or Cartoon Network or whatever it's called where you're located.

Inuyasha did a great job in it's character development and I have to admit I loved first 50 episodes. After it got too long and somewhat boring I had to watch more just because characters got me hooked.

Detective Conan is a good form of entertainment like any other detective series. You see, in Japan detective stories (mystery and suspense) in general is a very popular genre. And Detective Conan has likable characters and pretty well thought through murder schemes (too well thought through actually) so it is enjoyable.

And it's pretty rare that Japanese mystery shows are well thought out.

But also DC is something that Japanese kids can watch and is interesting enough for the parents too.

Although I can't disagree with that statement, you have to consider that Conan runs during prime time, and what people want then is not some serious drama, but rather entertainment. Conan does that well with the main character being a "kid", plenty of comedy, and pretty light atmosphere.

Now we are in the heart of things. So where did you hear of those two and what exactly about them was that appealed to you?

FMP was a fairly decent show. But Elfen Lied was rubbish from start to finish. It mystifies me to no end that half the people I know who've started to watch anime recently say it was because of Elfen Lied.

I was first shown a little bit of Elfen Lied by my friend. Before that, i had only watched retarded western cartoons and was under the impression that there were no interesting cartoonish stuff to watch, so Elfen Lied was like a revolution at that time. I started looking into anime and downloaded the ones i thought sounded interesting, starting with the three Full Metal Panic series.

That's actually a pretty good choice, especially the last one of the series.

I think we're trying to work out what in particular attracts hordes of anime noobs, rather than just trolling about series we don't like.

I think Dragonball Z would be the main culprit for reeling in "noobs" to anime. From there on said noobs go to Naruto ("Omfgninjas"), Onepiece ("Omfgpirates") and Love Hina ("Omfgsemi-naked-but-probably-underage-girls with large breasts") etc. We all know who the main villain is in this story though. It's clearly Cartoon Network (at least here in the UK, don't know about elsewhere in the world) playing all those shitty dubbed versions of what would otherwise be semi-decent animes.

For me, Ah! My Goddess was my first true anime love, but I admit to being hooked on DBZ when I was like 12 or something. Meh.

To be fair, Dragon Ball was fairly decent until it got to "Z".

When Goku was still little, and couldn't do all his Kamehamehas, and when Kuririn and Yamcha weren't completely obsolete yet.

I think the dubbing really ruins most animes when they're dubbed for release on Cartoon Network. Also, the censorship of the blood + gore really pisses me off /pif

I find it amazing how one Kamehame-Ha can take up like three episodes.

Anything on Cartoon Network would suck anyways. All dubbs suck, which is why watching anime on television is useless, they wouldn't broadcast any good animes on TV either way. I haven't watched TV at all for about one year and 2 months now, since i can easily get anything i want to watch on my computer, + no commercials, getting to chose exactly when to watch, how much to watch, etc. The TV is pretty much useless for anything else that a monitor, which is what i use mine for.

I suppose the majority of anime noobs start off with commerce animes such as the ones they broadcast in the west. It's not uncommon for someone who is new to anime to list things such as DBZ and Naruto when they post in forums and ask for suggestions or join discussion threads.

Personally i've never shown interest in DBZ or Naruto, or anything else they've broadcasted in this country, except for Pokemon, which i watched for a while when i was about 9-10 years old.

Why people simply download/watch the animes which are popular in the west is incomprehensive to me. Offcourse there are those who know nothing about the internet and how to find things, and thus use Limewire or Bearshare, or more commonly known BT sites such as ThePirateBay and Mininova to download shows they've seen/heard of, but their numbers shouldn't be all that high, or perhaps they are.

either way, it's probably due to people not knowing enough about anime and not being selective.

To be fair, the dubs for Cowboy Bebop weren't terrible.

Like everything, there are good, average and horrible dubs. Sadly, theres a lot more horrible dubs than good ones.

I once forgot to change over to japanese audio while watching Azumanga Daioh. It came like a shock when their voices were different, i quickly pressed the pause button, opened the window, took in some fresh air and tried to forget about it. For five minutes after that i felt like i had something to feel guilty about and my stomach ached a bit.

Dubs are horrible. When i was a tiny kid watching cartoons on TV, i used to change the audio to english.
