So ive been thinking

Postby Shakedown 1979 » Sat Jan 20, 2007 5:25 am

I really miss my old cat Neko. I had to give him aweay when I lost my old job and couldnt afford cat food and litter etc. I want to get a new cat but I dont know if I should go through the newspaper or if I should go down to the SPCA. I thought I would ask you all for advice. Also I would prefer a kitten Now I know either way ill more then likely have to pay for shots and a possible declawing (im against it but my mother bitches about the furniture) So I dont see that factoring in and as long as the cat is cute and loveable like the old one I raised I will be happy.

Any suggestions?

Ohhhh poor Neko T_T I didn't know that. In future, maybe you could use soil instead of litter o_o and feed him mashed potato (with milk and butter mixed in) and stuff... biscuits aren't that expensive though ^_^

I prefer cats over kittens... kittens are so hyper.. all the time.. but they're cute :3

I'd go to the SPCA o_o if you got a kitten that's not been treated well, you might get a super shy kitten who'd never dare to destroy furniture ^^? Maybe.

Maybe you can try
http://www.petfinder.com/

for a listing of local shelters and rescue groups.

Checking craigslist pet section might not be bad, at least for this area the section is pretty well self regulated.

Most people I know would go to a place looking for one kind of breed of pet then end up going home with a totally different one from just falling in love with it when meeting it. I'd say, try to meet some cats (visit a shelter or whatever) and the right one might just find you.

Edit:: dang, there's a ton of kittens stuck in a brooklyn pet shelter that's full with another kitten wave expected from cats breeding more due to the abnormally warm weather here. FU craigslist... now I'm all depressed... kittens with colds

Domestic cats are a travesty of nature anyway... neutering and declawing aren't that much further down the adjusting-an-animal-to-suit-our-tastes line.

For the record though, I'd never declaw a cat :<

I didnt declaw my last cat but that meant it had to stay in my room ... akways. and what kind of life is that being confined to one room. Thats the only reason I will declaw my next one

Cat teeth are lame, I let my cat gnaw on my hand all day. The moment those razorblades at the end of her paws get stuck into my arm, it's an entirely different ballgame.

And yes, it is by my own negligence/laziness that they often remain uncut for weeks

Small, helpless, fuzzy creatures are my weakness

But now that he has grown up, weighs 20lbs, and bites the fucking ehll out of me for no reason, I regret every second of every day that I took him home

edit

as a point of reverence, I have two very deep gashes on my body from two seperate incidents, that seemingly bled for hours.

I still have scars from when I used to live at home with two 30lbs cats.

Adoption is a tricky business, I prefer pet stores since cats there are more docile than a potentially furious shelter cat, but at the same time one should look into saving a cat from being destroyed.

I knew a guy that worked in an animal shelter and he had more than a few stories about sickly mistreated kittens.

Makes me sad just thinking about the poor things.

I try to discourage petstore animal purchases.

1) They only sell purebreeds, Pure breeds have genetic conditions resulting from the excessive inbreeding it took to create the species, that can be very expensive and hard on the pocketbook to deal with.

2) More often than not, pet stores don't take very good care of their animals, nor do they store them in any acceptable fashion. [ Those small little cages you see them on display in are generally where they stay until someone buys them ]

3) Risk of disease, That many animals in such a small space..if any one of them gets sick they all get sick..and some times you can't tell until its to late.

EDIT

My cat.

No, the chair isn't as dirty as it looks..I just forgot to set the light settings on my camera right when I took the pic that makes the whole damn thing dingy..and my stupid fucking cousin put water stains in the arms with her drink the day before I took this.

I've been to several adoption places where they're really upfront about the animal's behavior.
If it's looney, weird quirks, bad with kids, etc, they'll tell you right away.

But, who wouldn't take a "risk" with cats like these,

You don't have to declaw the cat, you can just trim it's claws once a week or so, and then they won't be sharp.
