As with Love Hina Akamatsu-sensei's novels are much better than the corresponding anime titles. You should read the manga after. If you enjoy watching the title then don't start the manga. That action might ruin your enjoyment of the series.

Its the anime version of Harry Potter of course he threw a harem in for good measure.

The manga outshines the anime by a long shot tho.
