Album Reviews

Postby silverace99 » Fri Feb 17, 2006 1:51 pm

This is in response to some of newleaf's complaints in the suggestion thread. So instead of a retarded, "what are you listening to right now?" thread, I figured we could actually have some real discussion of music. I'll start.

Image
Album: Fort Minor
Artist: Mike Shinoda, various guest rappers/singers

Info: Mike is the lead rapper for Linkin Park. Emo flamers should know that this album is nothing like Linkin Park in any way whatsoever. Rather than a rock/rap/techno mix, Fort Minor employs a rap/hiphop style.

Review:

Fort Minor is an extremely refreshing change from popular music made by no-talent rapper labels like 50 Cent and I-20. The lyrics are crisp, literate, and do not include any mention of "bling", "going down south", or "diamond rings". Mike is accompanied on several songs by a good suppporting cast of guest rappers/singers.
The songs range from arrogant, high-energy tracks such as "Remember the Name" and "Petrified" to somber, serious topics such as in "Where'd you Go" and "Kenji". "Where'd You Go" talks about family relationships being strained by work, while "Kenji" is a documentary of sorts about the Japanese internment camps during WWII.
Overall, this is a great standalone debut album from Mike Shinoda; I'd love to see some more works from him in the future.

My Personal picks on this album:

"Remember the Name"
"Petrified"
"Red to Black"

Overall Rating: 9 / 10

I've always been a big fan of Mike Shinoda's work, even when in Linkin Park. His vocals were refreshing in some songs, like "A Place for my Head", in contrast to Chester's high-pitched whining.

Is it a very popular album? I would download it immediately.

ALBUM: Slum Village
ARTIST: Slum Village

REVIEW: T3 and Elzhi and emerge out of a period of transformation of the Slum Village group to put together a solid album. It's a soulful, upbeat, headbobbing hip-hop record that does not dissapoint; they're back with a vengeance. Heavy on old school soul samples, guitar rifs, melodic beats, R&B roots, and thoughtful lyrics, this is a diamond in the rough

"Rap is much more than platinum and gold, so much to talk about the sneakers and clothes, it ain't about the minor records that I might have sold ... Your soul's loco, we cover the planet, real music is the language, yall can't understand it"

In regards to Silver's post, I did a bit of research and found this:

http://www.fortminor.co.uk/about.html

Fort Minor is a solo project set up by Linkin Park EmCee Mike Shinoda. Accompanied by a group of close friends, he has produced and recorded a solo album. With over 20 songs already recorded, and himself and Jay-Z at the production helm

Jay Z, although not a preferred artist of mine, is quite skilled. The man has a gift for what he does and is capable of remembering/spitting lyrics right out of his mind without having to write them down. You can be sure to have some quality if he's involved.

Heh. You make it sound like a quick fix for leaf's bitching. Maybe I should rename it the "leaf on his soapbox" thread. :swt:

I tend to write a hell of a lot when I review something, so I'll try to keep it simple.

Punky Brüster - Cooked on Phonics
Cooked on Phonics is the hilarious story of a fictitious Cookie-Monster-voiced Death Metal band, Cryptic Coroner, and their realization that the real money is in punk.

So it's 1996. Strapping Young Lad's debut album, Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing, was released the previous year, and whilst the album's success was slowly building in most places, the Japanese market bought it up in droves. Around the same time, a bunch of famous Metal bands were radically changing their style for the money that only a mainstream crowd can bring. SYL's frontman, Devin Townsend, figures this is an interesting concept to roll with, and asks Sony Japan if he can make a parody punk rock album for a laugh. They agree, and Punky Brüster is formed.

Despite the fact that the album managed to climb to number three in the Japanese charts, it was never commercially available outside of Japan for many years. Apparently Century Media feared that fans of Townsend's work wouldn't get the joke. See, thing is, this album's metal playing punk, taking the piss out of both, and therefore it's gonna alienate all the serious fans of each genre. So what are we left with? Everyone that has a sense of humour.

The story begins with Cryptic Coroner stepping up to play a seemingly ordinary gig, only to break a string and find themselves improvising punk rock to keep the crowd from attacking them. And so Punky Brüster is born. The story follows the band in their quest for more money; from breaking a string onstage, to firing and hiring a manager, to having a groupie run in terror after finding a metal poster on the bedroom wall, to winning a Grammy. There's more to our tale of "the punk phenomenon of the century," but them's the highlights.

The music is a fairly standard affair, but then, that's the point. As the back cover proudly states, "Hear the authentic "Punk-O-Phonic" recording quality! Gawk at stunning three-chord song structures! Wince through a lot of bad filler material!" Even so, the song writing is more complex than your average punk band, and maintains that "Townsend" feel. The songs are strong enough to stand up on their own, and lyrically really stand out as some of Townsend's greatest sarcastic genius moments.

In short? If you're looking for a chuckle, look no further than Punky Brüster's Cooked on Phonics.

Now you get what you want, and I get two threads to raise my e-penor with. :p

I listened to the song hosted by EvilSquirrel. Definitely quality beats put into that song. I didnt like the content of the song though. Im more a fan of deep songs about poverty, politics, hardships of life, etc. Im not too fond of fucking a girl's sister. Heh, not to overlook it though. It's still a good listen when you're just chilling out and not paying too much focus to lyrics.

Well, no... I don't. I just wanted the redundant threads locked. Buuut, I won't get into it here.

I'll put up a rapidshare link to Cooked on Phonics when I find the damn CD.

ALBUM: Do You Want More?!!!??!
ARTIST: The Roots

REVIEW: The Roots are a psuedo jazz-hip hop band like no other that continue to prove to the world that there is still some good music out there. Their debut album, Do You Want More?!!!??!, is the most mellow, relaxed, and jazzy in their catologue. Lead rappers Black Thought and Malik B relentlessly spit fire over live instrumentals provided by drummer ?uestlove, human beatbox Rahzel, keyboardist Scott Storch, bassist Leonard Hubbard, and the rest of the band. The entire album is recorded live with no samples, making for something rarely heard in an otherwise predictable genre.

Uploaded the full album for you guys

Matisyahu is somewhat of a Jewish reggae-ska band. They really put it off well and they have a few hit singles out, like King Without a Crown.

I've only listened to the full album once, so I can't really emember much, nor say anything other than it's good music, original, and some tracks are real chill.

Album: On
Artists: The Boom Boom Satellites

The Boom Boom Satellites compose a mixture of techno and guitar riffs. If, like me, you're into seat-of-your-pants speed techno, check this album out. These guys apparently built up their reputation doing tracks in the Europe techno scene before becoming famous. It's great energy music all around.

My picks:

"Kick It Out"
"Girl"
"Play"
"Loaded"

Here's a sample ("Girl"): http://rapidshare.de/files/21407885/Boo ... l.mp3.html

Are there any radiohead fans here? I've got some good content on them that I'm willing to upload if anybody actually likes them.

String Quartet did two tribute albums for them.

Still interested?

I also downloaded two John MAyer albums from torrentspy.com. John Mayer is one hell of a guitarist, but people know him more for his way of singing.

Dashboard's new album? weak.

Goo Goo Dolls new album? they've lost it.

John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Matt Costa, Ben Harper: my favorite acoustic artists.

Yes I'm still interested.

I'll put up a review of Jack Johnson's latest album soon, when I get home tonight... in 5 and a half hours.

Never heard of Ben Harper.

I miss Elliot Smith. =\ Why'd he have to kill himself AFTER he got famous? What a tease.
