Surely having him alive would be just be an invitation for retaliatory hostage-taking in hopes of an exchange, followed by taxpayers paying to keep him in prison for life?

I suppose it would've been nice to at least hold some semblance of a trial for him, so they could at least pretend they were delivering justice instead of plain old vengeance.
