Looking for something

Postby silverace99 » Tue Jan 30, 2007 2:20 pm

Ok so here's the deal: My electrical bill this month is double my bill from last month. I've been racking my head trying to figure out why, as I only keep on my heater on 50 degrees and don't turn on the lights when I don't have to.

Finally i noticed that the windowblinds covering my patio glass door were rippling even though it didn't look like anything was disturbing them. And it hit me that the wind from outside is probably penetrating somehow into my apartment, hence making my heater work harder even to maintain 50 degrees.

So my question is this: Does anybody know if there is such thing as maybe a type of tape that can be placed over edges of doors and such to seal them and prevent air from getting through? If I can get my hands on something like that then my power bill won't try to rape me again next month.

Most insulation kits I've seen are the type that you wrap a see through plastic sheet around the window frame.

I'd just go with heavy curtains. Could just find some bulk material in the art or theater dept.

Just duct tape a folded cloth in the gap between the door and the edge. You won't have trouble closing the door since the cloth could easily be smushed into that tiny space, yet still take up any space that needs to be sealed.

makes sense to me.

Grab some old heavy blankets that are cool looking and put then around your window.

Well I've seen those rubber things that you stick on the door edge, but not sure of it will fall off due to it being a sliding door, and not an out opening one.

That's not Caulk, that's polyurethane foam that expands to fill the available space inside the crevice and crack it is inserted into. It is not suitable to his needs because it dries into a hard foam substance that would require far to much time and effort to shave down to get a tight seal to stop the air penetration while allowing use of the door.

I should suggest he take a cigarette, or some other source of smoke, and go around the door and find out where the air is seeping in from.

if its the edge that it buts up against the wall with, It would be a simple as going and getting some self adhesive weather stripping and running two strips of it down the recess into the wall that the door closes into [ This is assuming that his patio door is a sliding door, if not, then next paragraph ]

if its a regular opening door, Then he would just have to run a single strip of weather stripping along the inside lip of the door [ the part that the door hits to prevent it from swinging passed its closed position ]

He should note that over time weather stripping looses its effectiveness from being compressed, and should check it about once or twice a year to make sure its still making a seal.

If you need anymore help with the issue hit me up in PM or IMs, I wouldn't mind advising you further.

Weather strip and duct tape stuff looks retarded. You should push a big teddy bear or one of those cute lying down tigers against the bottom of the door and get some heavy curtains, yah.
Out of curiosity, do you have electric or gas water heating? Electric water cylinders account for the majority of power consumption in an average family home o_o Space heating is a considerably smaller portion. I don't know about bummy student apartments though.

More likely the power consumption is from your neighbours knocking a hole in an adjoining wall and splitting a power outlet off your wiring so they can run their stuff though :3

Btw Koma, do you word stuff particularly dodgily just so you can chuck a spaz when peopel mention it?
Caulk is also a crack or gap sealer which actually tends to contract a little, whereas I think you're thinking of some sort of self expanding space filler.
