It's wrong, of course. Overusing it might sound strange sometimes, but if you really think so, let me tell you you're seriously mistaken. Just listen and learn. :p

Yeah, whatever...

Tell me that every guy saying "sô desu ne" or "sô da ne" is gay... <_<
Tell me every guy in the service industry is gay. <_<

I know nothing about you and your skills, and I hate sounding pretentious, but I think I know one thing or two about Japanese, having graduated it at the university, lived here for a quite a while, met a lot of people and had a lot of discussions, listened to "actual" conversations.
Using "ne" is natural, even for straight guys, like "wa", what matters is the tone of it.
Though overdoing it is indeed "weird", as I said.

Now you'll tell me I'm wrong, and I won't give a sh... I don't use it, and even if I did...
Well, who cares?

I watched an unsubtitled trailor for a movie called "Shinobi" and I understood about 75% or more of it. I was very surprised at what I could piece together.

Also, I watched this live "Bleach" concert show video and understood most of it as well.

It's very interesting what I have learned just simply by watching anime with subtitles.

Anime japanese is consistent enough to give you a lot of solid phrases. From numerous accounts though, it's a lot harder to talk to people than watch raws ^_^

Heres to studying abroad there this spring :o

I don't know why everyone is saying college japanese is so hard. I took courses 101-103 this year with very little problems. The language makes quite a bit of logical sense and once you learn the rules, the rest is just memorizing vocab and and piecing together new grammar to make more complicated sentences.

I definately write better than I speak though.

Hooray!! I'm gonna continue my Japanese class in senior year... It shoulda officially be my 4th year learning Japanese but those admin bastard screw up the scheduling system made me missed a year of Japanese class...

Geh!!!! Although I think I improved on my listening skill from watching too much anime..... :swt:

ONE THING CONCERNING THE WORD LOLITA!!! It's not originally Japanese...It's actually originally from a title of a novel called Lolita written by a Russian-American which is about an adult who is attracted to a young girl --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolita for some reason influences the otaku realm??? :swt: Russians are weird...lol....

You're right Kasuga, I'm surprised some people forget about that.
The thing is Nabokov ( the author) hated what common usage did with the name of his heroin. Lolita became a common name long before Japanese started to use it, actually...

Then, Nabokov was the most American of all the Russian writers. He spoke French and English fluently, and his most famous books are written in english. He's never been willing to translate himself, though.

edit : and congrats/good luck for your studies.

finished four semesters of Japanese, only thing is that the classes were 3 hours instead of 5, so i basically got shafted.

know about 300 kanji, past tense grammar, informal and formal...etc. not very confident in it, need to get into the JET program so i can teach english and learn Japanese. *fingers crossed*

Study jap by myself. Pretty easily distracted by one word that reminds me of some anime. Jap Kanji and korean Hanja not much different only the expressions so yea if I study for year properly I maybe able you write like a 16yr old.

I just got accepted to go study for a semester at Kansai Gaidai in Osaka, and I'm applying through my school to go study all of next year at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, so if all goes according to plan I should be fluent by like next fall and be where I need to be on kanji by the time I get back.

I'm also going to apply for JET after I graduate so any thing you feel like relaying to me would be much appreciated. Saddly, from the people I've talked to about it the selection process seems really random. The schools give very very specific requests for what they want in their exchange teachers, and depending on the requests it sounds like you can get shafted for stupid reasons. At my school we've had full blown jap majors get turned down for people who have never studied japanese or been to jaapan :/
