I am a professional student working towards a degree in Forensic Pathology. With a focus in Biology and Criminology. It's taking me forever, but I am almost done.
I am also currently working in the ER at Queens Hospital.

Thanks, I appreciate that...it's really nice to know someone thinks it's cool. Whenever I tell someone what I want to do they look at me like I' am pycho (unless they're another doctor). I guess they can't picture a girl wanting to do something so grisly? Not that I enjoy everything about the job either.

Wow. Pretty cool profession! Yeah, I wouldn't mind going into that field myself, but that is perhaps due to watching to many tv programs :swt: I ususally only investigate dead animals...not quite the same.

So what do you do in the ER?

Thanks SHIRA! But, hey don't sell yourself short. Investigating dead animals is not as different as you think.... we are actually very similar. Once you get used to the fact that the body is just a container and that it's no longer a "person" it becomes easier. I know what you mean about the tv shows though. In a bio class I used to T.A. for the class was overflowing with people after C.S.I. got really popular

If it interests you then you should think about it, investigating animals by yourself is a sign of a true pathologist. Here, check these sample clips out http://videoatlas.louisville.edu/videoclips.htm we used these videos in our class. It was alot easier for people to undertsand human anatomy with these videos. Especially since we don't always have access to human cadavars (these are videos of real human dissections.) As for me, I basically assist in the ER when it's needed. But most of the time I help the patients when they checkin etc. so alot of the time I'am at a desk at this computer checking out BU  That is when no patients are in sight.

I recently had surgery on my clavicle and when I asked if I could possibly get the procedure videotaped...the doctor looked at me like I was nuts, that was the first time a doctor did that. Needless to say he said no and I missed out on my chance to see it. <_<

Vlastokov I know, people get so weirded out, it is funny. Where does your friend go to school?

University of Florida, with me. I have a weird group of friends. One of us is a Psychologist/Dancer, the other is a Forensic Pathologist, and I'm...studyingxD :swt:

She's one of those hippy chicks. She's the president of the Alachua County Animal Rights group and the UF animal rights group. She loves animals and doesn't like to see any of them mistreated, but she doesn't feel bothered by looking at a dead human body or blood or what not.

That's funny...we sound really similar....erm except for the hippie part. Iam the same way when it comes to animals and people though. The first time I had to dissect a cat was harder for me then the first time I had to do a human one. Please thank her for me in regard to her work to protect animals, I admire people like that.

Lol. I just meant that it was different in that we don't generally do crime scene investigation...:-) And I wouldn't normally start investigating random dead animals lying around....yuck >_< And I guess I'm actually already part of the pathology section of our uni...the aquatic one that is and find it very interesting... ^_^ I don't think my stomach would tolerate real dead people

Yeah, that series is good....it's nice to see books like that which accuratley portray the part of a pathologist....erm besides all the action packed chases etc.
I just read Blow Fly recently, I actually want to work for the FBI like her niece, but I'am afraid of the lie detector test <_< I'am not sure I'd pass.

Shira wrote:And I wouldn't normally start investigating random dead animals lying around....yuck

 Sorry I misunderstood you...I was kinda wondering about how you investigated dead animals....but I guess I am just used to being around people who are like that so I just assumed. Hmmm... that sounds scray. Anyway, doing that kinda stuff isn't my thing, but alot of famous pathologists started out that way so...yeah who am I to judge.
So what kinda job are you going to try to get into once you grad? Sounds like your doing interesting stuff.

I've read and I have every of her Scarepetta's stories plus her book about Jack the Ripper. It's one of the author that I buy in english as soon as her books are out. ^^

I love the characters but most of all all the forensic work just amazes me. Cornwell is the reason why I've never wrote murder stories. Every time I try to come up with it, I just think... err... No way... My murderer would be done for the minute Scarpetta would see the corpse. X')

[edit : err... such a big typo. O_O)]

@ Xandra
Oh yeah...how was Jack the Ripper? I was interested to see her take on that, but I heard mixed reviews.
If you like forensics try reading books like "Dead Reckoning" by Michael Baden. He's a really famous pathologist that has worked in high profile cases like the JFK assassination. That book explains exactly how everything works.
As for your writing, you sound like you would be very good at it....go for it! Not that I can talk I do the same thing.... good writers like Ms. Cornwell intimidate me...we should write our stories and then pass them on to eachother make reccomendations. :swt:

Well, I'm not really a "Jack the Ripper"'s specialist and honestly I read the book as if it was a fiction more than anything else. What she wrote and the solution she's coming up with seems to make sense. But again... What do I know ? ://

As for murder stories... most of all, I put my pride in it. Ten years ago, a litterature teacher of mine told us that everything has been done in murder stories except for ONE thing : the reader is the murderer. Ever since, it's been bugging me big time. I just can't think about another "configuration". Since I suck too much in science to defeat forensic, I decided that I have to find a way that would not sound lame. :x

@Vlastokov : yeah. Languages and Litteratures are my passions ever since childhood. It would be weird if I wasn't writing a little myself.
