he's not talking about the manga. He's talking about the naruto filler that's running right now, so kishimoto is not involved.

Wouldn't surprise me if Shikamaru knew, he's the hokage's personal aide of some type now.

Well, they're all Chuunin or Jounin now, so it wouldn't be that far-fetched for them to have been briefed on it at some point. But yeah, Kishimoto is a piss-poor writer.
