OK, I'll try to tell what I remember of the manga...
Mello had one of the gangsters use the book, because he was worried about the fake rules, where you die if you don't use it at least once in 13 days. Light had Misa use her eyes to look through the FBI database of criminals or something, because he knew that the death date of a notebook user doesn't show up.
Misa identified the criminal, and Light used his notebook to control the criminal's actions to find Mello's hideout. He figured out that Mello was blackmailing the president, and so he gave him a call as L, saying that he would help. He acquired a team of SF commandos, and tried to use them to storm the hideout. Turns out that the original shinigami of the notebook had found Mello's group. Being the idiot that he is, he agreed to help them since they wouldn't give him back his notebook. So the invisible shinigami tore off all the helmets of the commandos, causing the gangster with the shinigami eyes to kill them.
I think this is where the president dies as retaliation by Mello. Seems that there was a spy in Near's group, and most of the members get killed by Mello's notebook. The vice president holds a press conference, saying that they submit to Kira, and they cut all funding to Near's group, basically firing them.
Light figured out what happened to the commandos, and told Ryuuku to explain to the idiot shinigami why it would be better to not help the gangsters. Then he sent his notebook (I think it was his) to his dad through Ryuuku, saying that Kira wanted to get rid of Mello too, and that he trusted him. I think he kept a few pages taped to his body at all times so he wouldn't lose his memory.
This time, Light's group attacked and they got all the way to Mello, since the dumb shinigami was actually smart this time. They managed to grab the notebook, and Light's dad was facing off against Mello, one on one. His only weapon was Light's notebook, so he used shinigami eyes and threatened to write in Mello's name. Turns out one of the gangsters was just playing possum, and shot Light's dad in the back. Mello set off a bomb, and was able to escape. Light's dad died in the hospital, and never did write Mello's name. So although Light has the name, he can't kill Mello since he's never seen him before, and only has a drawing. Before Light's dad died, he said he was glad to know for sure that Light wasn't Kira, since he could see his date of death. (He gave up the book, after all.)
So the dumb shinigami got his book back, and the Japanese police keeps Kira's book. Light secretly kills some people with the book, so that it's his again and he doesn't have to worry about losing his memory. Near is still active, even though he has no government support now. Mello contacts his female spy, and tells Near the info the dumb shinigami gave him about the fake rules. He also tells his suspicions of the new L being Kira. So Light is being investigated once again, and starts to get worried.
At this time, that fat host from Sakura TV sets up his Kingdom of Kira. He sends out questionaires to his audience about how they feel about Kira. Light manages to get a hold of the results, and finds someone he likes. He decides that it's too dangerous for Misa to keep a note book, so tells her to give it up. Then he sends the note book to this guy, with instructions to use it in the name of Kira. I can't remember this guy's name, so I'll just call him Lawyer since that's his job.
Lawyer begins "judging" as Kira, and everyone (Light's group, Near's group, and Mello) goes to Japan. Since Light is being closely observed (Near manages to convince some of Light's group to keep a close eye on him) he can't send instructions to Lawyer. One day, Lawyer gets up in the Sakura TV audience and says that he is a devout believer of Kira, and that he will do his best to do what Kira wishes, in absence of any instructions. So since he doesn't get any messages, he kills the fat Sakura TV host, exactly as Light wishes.
He chooses a new TV host to speak through, which turns out to be Takagi (one of Light's girl friends in college). Light volunteers to go and meet with Takagi, in view of their past relationship, in order to try and find "Kira". He manages to convince his team to only bug the hotel room where they meet with listening

ces, no audio. So while his mouth is saying one thing, he's writing out instructions to Takagi. Since Takagi is a secret Kira supporter, she does what he says and contacts Lawyer. So now Light mangages to control Lawyer through Takagi. He also orders Lawyer to give a few pages of the death note to Takagi, and gives Takagi the drawing of Mello.
By this time, Near has managed to insert the female spy of his team into Takagi's bodyguard (Takagi had become the de facto queen of "Kira's Kingdom"). One of the police officers had beome almost 100% certain that Light is Kira now, because he sees that a ton of hotel paper is used up every time that Light meets Takagi, because of the written messages. So he contacts Near and they sort of cooperate.
Near challenges L, and they decide to meet up face to face. He has managed to figure out that Lawyer is the new Kira, so he sends out one of his two remaining men, who I shall call Stalker, to stalk him. Stalker manages to go through Lawyer's belongings, since Lawyer has obsessive-compulsive disorder or something, and always goes to the gym every Thursday at the same time, and that's the only time his belongings are away from him. Stalker manages to find the death note, and takes pictures of every page and brings them back to Near.
It is now only a couple of days until Light and Near's showdown, when Mello manages to kidnap Takagi with the help of the female spy. Since Takagi knows Mello's real name, and now that she has seen him, she kills him with the few pages she has with her, then calls Light. Light is very happy of course, but uses his part of a page he keeps in his watch to make her set her surroundings on fire and commit suicide. That takes care of her and the death note pages. He also makes sure that the time of the showdown hasn't changed because of this.
So the day of the showdown finally comes. Near and Light meet in a warehouse with their teams. They talk for a bit and reveal their plans to each other. Lawyer comes, takes a peek, and uses his shinigami eyes to write down everyone's names, except for Light's.
Well, the Near knew that Lawyer would do this and explains his plan. Apparently, he had Stalker replace Lawyer's notebook with a fake that was forged by the other guy on his team. After Lawyer writes down all the names in this fake notebook, they will take it. The name that doesn't show up would be Kira.
Light had already suspected this was Near's plan from the beginning. So from the beginning it wasn't Lawyer killing people. The notebook lawyer kept with him was a fake, and the real one was actually in a safety deposit box in the bank. Instead, everyone night Lawyer had phoned Takagi and she was the one who killed people using her pages. Of course, the fake was being updated with the times and way of death all written down. And so Takagi also wrote them this way, so Near couldn't tell the difference. Light was confident he had won and at 38 seconds or so he started laughing and declaring his victory.
To his surprise, everyone stayed alive. Turned out that when Takagi was kidnapped, Lawyer had messed up his schedule to go to the bank and used his real death note to try and kill Takagi. Stalker had noticed this and later on stole the key to the safety deposit box and found the real death note. So the forger guy forged
another fake to put into the box. So the one Lawyer was using at the warehouse turned out to be fake as well.
So Near said how right before the kidnapping, Mello had contacted him saying that he knew of his plan but wasn't sure it would work. So he had kidnapped Takagi to be 100% sure of where the real death note was. Near says that individually they aren't capable of beating Light, but M+N > L.
So now Light has been exposed as Kira. Here follows a couple chapters where he tries to convince everyone that he's right. While his back is turned to everyone and he tries to kill Near by writing on the page in his watch (he knows everyone's names after looking at the notebook Lawer wrote in). Matsuda realizes what he is doing and shoots him a couple times in his back. Light yells at Lawyer to finish writing the name on the page.
Lawyer turns out to be a psycho freak and refuses, saying that there's no way that God is so desperate and disgusting like how Light is acting now. His faith is gone and he only sits there like he's brain dead. Ryuuku now says that Light has lost his game to Near. And he says that according to the rule/bet that they had made at the beginning of the manga, he will kill Light. And that's what happens.
