How to Convert MKV to AVI with subs.

As my question states, i would like to know how to do it as easy as possible. I google this same question alot, but i never understand how to do it. I'm a total noobie, so if anyone could explain it step by step i would be VERY grateful. I'm using windows vista(64bit), if that makes things any easier. I would appreciate any help i could get.

you dont need to... google search the mkv file type, and you should be able to download a player that plays them. in fact, look up windows media player classic. that one will play .mkv files for sure. its the one i use, and should work when windows media player wont.

Hey HazardousWaste, sorry i didn't specify that i wanted to burn my converted files to dvd format. I already use MPC. If you can give me any advice i would appreciate it.

Have you tried googling for an app to do it?
I use mkv2vob to convert mkvs to vob for streaming to the ps3 (found it via google)... and I find it highly likely someone's developed a simple application to convert mkv to avi and is sharing it already.

If all else fails, you can google for separate tools to demux your mkv then make an avi with the constituent streams.
